The Colourful Mr Crisp

The Colourful Mr Crisp

Following the real life story of Quentin Crisp (played by BAFTA award winner John Hurt) we observe how a proud gay man lived out his life in the most exciting way possible. In the 1930’s it was evident that Crisp had no place in England as he proudly walked about the streets of England in make-up and slightly strange clothing. As the years passed by the abuse towards Quentin got worse which led to him seek refuge in New York. Upon his arrival he immediately falls in love with the city where he feels a sense of belonging and pride.

After one stage show, he is approached by an agent who eventually ends up representing him. From there his career as a pioneering, proud, old gay man is launched. Everybody wants a piece of him and his theatre shows are sell-outs. During this time Crisp request to start writing film reviews for a pro-gay magazine. He becomes very good friends with the editor and soon his career is at an all time high. This is until he was asked how he felt about the growing Aids epidemic he shrugs off the issue with a flippant answer at a huge press launch. From there, the people he meets help him see the gay world through a fresher, younger pair of eyes.

The film is beautifully written, beautifully shot with beautiful acting and deals with issues of AIDS and homosexuality very well.
