The Brothers Bloom

I don’t think I usually am this excited about a film, but you must take my word for this one…The Brothers Bloom is a spectacular film, I am finding it hard to contain my excitement about this film and write something half readable! The film is wrapped up in a world where deception just as much an art form as a way of life for younger brother Bloom (Adrien Brody) and his elder brother Stephen (Mark Ruffalo).

Love birds: Penelope and Bloom

As children the brothers were orphans who went from one adoption home to the next. These times could have been hard for the boys however, Stephen (the older brother) saw their childhood as a calling to their life long talent, a talent he would nurture to turn both him and Bloom into international con artists. Stephen would be the mind behind each scam drawing out each step to con a victim and bloom would play the main role, hooking in the victim. However, it wasn’t until 20years later would Bloom realise how desperate he would be for his brother to stop playing the role of a playwright and let Bloom go ahead and live his own life.

In the film we see Bloom attempt to not only break away from his brother but also help him finish off one last scam. In doing so, the plan goes slightly pear-shaped when Bloom realises he has fallen in love with his victim a young woman called Penelope (Rachel Weisz).

The film balances itself on both art forms and the classic formations of story telling.  When you go to see the film you will see what I mean when I say, if you printed every single shot of The Brothers Bloom you could sell the images for beautiful pieces of artwork. Director Rian Johnson developed this unique yet genius cinematic point of view by dividing his teenage years between absorbing classic films and making home movies with his friends. The Brother Bloom really does add his amazingly unique style to each shot. There is equally as much humour as there is depth, not to forget the immense passion seen in each actor’s performance.

Mark Ruffalo gives an amazing performance as Stephen

Rian Johnson was happy to admit that working with this star-studded cast was one of the most daunting things he did. “When I made my first feature, the one thing I had never done was work with professional actors I was absolutely terrified. I was frightened that there would be some sort of secret language I wasn’t privy to, or a secret way of talking to them in their method. But I learned that it’s just a matter of knowing the story you’re telling. Then it’s just getting together with some really cool people who are good at their jobs and telling that story.”

Although his cast members and fellow filmmakers compliment Rian Johnson for

knowing exactly what he wants when he comes to the set, the director himself says he most looks forward to the give and take of collaboration with his team. “After I’ve written the script and storyboarded the whole thing out, I have a version of the movie in my head,” Johnson says. “By the time we actually go to production, I’m a little bit sick of that movie in my head. I’ve gone over it all a thousand times. One of the great pleasures of it for me is then bringing in this group of artists, the designers, the director of photography, the editor and the actors who come in and mess with it.”

This film is such a beautiful story and I urge you all to go see it when it comes out!
