Following his success with the major hit Calendar Girls, director Nigel Cole is back with a new film – Made in Dagenham.

The film is set in the Ford manufacturing plant in Dagenham, Essex. Famous for its high production of Ford cars, it was common for many couples to both be working for Ford. The men would deal with the mechanics, whilst the women were crammed into an awful, dirty and at times flooded warehouse where they would stitch all the interior fabrics for each car.

Life definitely could have been a lot better. That is when Rita (played by actress Sally Hawkins) gets an idea – equal pay! Don’t be fooled though- in true cinema style there are huge hurdles to overcome. Here in this film, we see how one woman’s courage manages to inspire a whole community in the fight for equal pay.

Cole uses an all star- British cast who give a fantastic performance. It is clear if you have studied the history of women’s rights that the story has stayed true to the facts. Cole even goes to the extent of using real footage from 1970′s Dagenham.

The only downfall about the film would have to be its lack of ethnic diversity, but overall the film is wonderfully written, beautifully shot and incredibly driven by its emotive actions. This really is a film with a difference.

Released in UK cinemas nationwide: 1st October 2010

Overall Rating: 8/10

For Holiday/Fall 2010, Nike Sportswear bring together and reinvent some of the most iconic items of running apparel.

This collection takes influences from vintage running apparel and the uniforms of running clubs such as this updated AW77 Hoody based on the original uniform of Nike’s Athletics West running club of ’77.

Nike Sportswear Air Max 1 ND
For 2010, the Nike Air Max 1 ND, now a firm style icon, is back in a big way, re-released in eye-catching new color schemes.

Nike Sportswear Athletics West Destroyer Jacket
The NSW Destroyer Jacket is Nike Sportswear’s take on a high-school classic, the letterman jacket. Like the AW77, The NSW Destroyer Jacket is released in a number of different ways for Fall/Holiday 2010 and features graphics that evoke college fraternities/clubs and ultimately the team spirit.

This summer, NIKE and USA Basketball brought together some of the world’s best basketball teams and top musical performers to New York City for the inaugural World Basketball Festival.

In celebration of the performance and culture of the sport of Basketball, NIKE teamed up with Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum and Make Something!!, a DIY art program founded by Aaron Rose, for a series of design workshops for teenagers in and around New York City. Students were given the chance to work with Nike designers, world-famous artists and basketball players to create artwork which celebrates the culture of basketball. The workshops gave students the chance to design their own versions of the Nike Sportswear Destroyer Jacket and Hyperdunk as well as creating a one of a kind hybrid basketball shoe!

After design week, a series of community design projects took place with guest teachers where the students developed projects that will form the World Basketball Tournament. Among the tutors were Carrie Munden, creator of Cassette Player, who worked with the students on a costume design workshop, and DJ A-Trak who worked with the students to pull together their own beat for the final festival.

The outcome of the project was a beautifully visual magazine put together by the students and Emma Reeves from V magazine. Also named Make Something, the magazine documents the five week work put in by the students.

Not that it means that much in the long run, escaping the curse of the Mercury Music Prize is always a hard one. Has anyone heard anything of Speech Debelle since last year? I think not. Let’s have a little butchers at whose in the running this year shall we?

Biffy Clyro – “Only Revolutions”

Biffy Clyro have been knocking around in some sort of form since 1995, breaking through to major success in 2007 with their album “Puzzle”. “Only Revolutions” was the follow up and hit Gold pretty quickly after it’s release peaking at no. 8 in the UK Album Charts. It’s a well crafted album within it’s alternative-emo-rock genre, but ultimately a token nomination.

Corinne Bailey Rae – “The Sea”

The Tragic circumstances that brought about the death of her husband are heard throughout this album. Her fragile tone and alluring lyrics haunt this downtempo jazz-pop album. It’s not showy, Rae is a musician who knows her craft and moves beautifully within her chosen genre.

Dizzee Rascal – “Tongue N’ Cheek”

A Great British rapper to be proud of, “Tongue N’ Cheek” whilst winning the award for most suitable album title, is a fun filled, lively positive step forward in UK rap music. A Previous Mercury Music Prize winner in 2003 for “Boy in Da Corner”, the boy has grown up and proven that he’s one of the strongest forces on the British music scene.

Dizzee Rascal & Armand Van Helden – Bonkers from bezzle on Vimeo.

Foals – “Total Life Forever”

By far the worse album on the list. One of those bands that everyone thinks are really clever and everyone wants to like, but actually fail miserably at being human beings let alone musicians. Check out this fucking terrible song:

I Am Kloot – “Sky At Night”

A band that have been stalwarts of the Manchester music scene for ages. Singer and Guitarist “John Bramwell” is one of the greatest lyricists around. Lyrically this album tops the list, beautiful lengthy missives, offering such wonderful splendor. Aptly, this album is produced by 2008 Mercury Music Prize Winners Elbow, maybe the Guy Garvey and co touch will help this album seal the top spot. Lush string arrangements scenically interweaving with the guitars, and solid lazy-day drums make this album a real wonder.

Kit Downes Trio – “Golden”

Could it be a token Jazz nomination? Yes. These guys met at Royal Academy and certainly are great players. Not really a hope in winning sadly.

Laura Marling – “I Speak Because I Can”

Produced by Ethan Jones (Ryan Adams, Kings of Leon, Paulo Nutini) a nice little folk album for the list here. Maybe if she wins we wont see another pensive moody press shot of her pale angelic face… oh wait yeah we probably will.

Laura Marling – Devil’s Spoke

Mumford & Sons – “Sigh No More”

Dueling Banjo’s step out in Boy Band form, the “Breakthrough” act of recent times, that actually have been breaking through for a long time, like slowly procuring entrails from a dead horse left rotting in a field in Shropshire for 6 months. A good drinking game album: take a shot every time Marcus says the word heart, talks about God, or his emotions, mind or soul. One song in you’re on the floor.

Paul Weller – “Wake Up the Nation”

Yes he’s still opinionated, he’s still got a stupid hair cut, he’s still making shit music, he’s Paul Weller and we’re guessing “Wake Up The Nation” wasn’t quite the call to arms he expected. Pretty much responsible for “The Enemy”, enough said…

The xx – “xx”

A really compelling album from a bunch of well balanced chromosomes… Really doesn’t work live though, unless you like leaving the house and paying to be depressed.

Villagers – “Becoming a Jackal”

An Irish band signed to Domino, another lyrical led album, however Connor O’Brian’s voice isn’t as convincing enough in delivery and the music isn’t as natural and absorbing as “I Am Kloot”, perhaps that will come with age…

Wild Beasts – “Two Dancers”

The best, most original, compelling, talented band in Britain. They deserve to win across all boards, even with the futility of Tom the Bass player to sing lead on far too many songs on the album when Hayden is much the more talented and natural leading man.

Varun Sardana: "I just design what I design, and let’s see how you react to it."

One of the most creative contemporary designers in India, Varun Sardana’s bold fall collection centered around an origami motif that he embedded in everything from capes to dresses, as well as some incredible black thigh-high boots. Ramya Gopal and I had a conversation with the Delhi-trained and based designer about his design philosophy and the emerging fashion industry in India.

How do you find your inspiration?

I love observing things in people; it’s one of my favorite pastimes.

Music inspires me a lot, often when I start designing it starts with music. Music kind of sets the mood for me when I start my next collection.

I look at fabric as a blank canvas or like a lump of clay that I can mold and shape and basically give it another existence.

Your work seems targeted to a more international market, do you currently have any plans to expand more within India?

I would like to be able to market more in India, but what I’m designing probably doesn’t make sense for a lot of people, though it does make sense for a lot of people too. It’s difficult to sell here because there isn’t really a [store] space in which my clothes would make sense.

If I’m proposing something that doesn’t make sense now in India, it will make sense five years down the line, or seven years down the line. You need the support of the media to push tastes in that direction. […] It’s taken me over four years to get over the fact that you can show cleavage [in Dubai], whereas here it’s ok to show a midriff.

It’s not about trends anymore—where people say ‘this season is short skirts, this season is long skirts‘– it’s about attitude. But a lot of people in India still haven’t figured out what fashion means to them on a day-to-day basis.

How easily is your work received domestically? Are people who purchase high-end fashion more attached to foreign brands?

There is a good population [within India] who are buying high-end clothes based only on aesthetics and not just brands. There is that niche. It’s easier for me to do business in the West because there is already a market over there right now, people understand what they’re looking at, but there’s not such a big market over here.

You still don’t have a Lady Gaga here who is willing to experiment with a young designer who’s totally mad. You have an Aishwarya Rai or someone like that in Bollywood who is willing to wear designers but wouldn’t wear something so mad.

Do you design with an idea of how you fit into a certain scene in mind, or does each season come together more organically?

I don’t think I design with any specific market or need in mind, it’s always very personal. I just design what I design, and let’s see how you react to it.

I was recently put on to a new highly addictive game for the iphone, tidily named Above.

If you are like me and have a whole outside world that you would like to ignore from time to timeIt’s a insanely simple 2D platform title in which you control a suit clad dude (with a suitcase for effect), relentlessly jumping to unknown heights for no apparent reason. I know that isn’t the most appealing write up about a game but don’t let that throw you off.

More addictive than digestive biscuits with tea (all hail the biscuits!), Above’s simplicity and gives the game a very comfortable feel. As with the majority of the top iphone and ipod touch games available on the market. It aslo utilises an achievement system much like Angry Birds which always gives any games more of a replay value.

The colourful 2D anime-style graphics are simply great, i’m playing it on an iphone 4, so the crystal clear screen really allows you to appreciate the visuals.

Priced at £1.19 on the UK app store, it really is a bargain.

I definitely recommend you go and pick this game up dudes and dudettes.
